No he's not flying but taking a long walk off a short plank over the Heathrow decision. Bet Richmond will be delighted to be shot of him.

I very much doubt it - our middle son, who lives in Rhicmond, tells me that he is a very popular constituency MP who increased the Tory share of the vote by 8.5% in the last election, resulting in a majority of 23,015.

If he chooses to stand as an independent, they think he will be returned, although possibly not with such a large majority. If he doesn't, it's quite likely the seat will go to the Lib Dems, who held the seat up until 2010, when they were ousted by Zac G.

Whatever the case, Theresa look likely to see her small majority reduced.

TBH, though, I'm getting tired of politicians resigning over not getting their own way - why not STAY and deal with the issue/problem? Lazy cowards.

Maybe, for him, it's a principle. I dunno, perhaps he flounced, but it is possible he said he would go if Heathrow was chosen and now it has been, he's following through.

A politician who sticks to his word it seems. He has no future obviously.

Isn't that what he's doing by standing as an independent?

Apparently the tories may not put a candidate up against him for fear of splitting the vote and thus letting in the lib dems.

He pledged that he would and now, according to the letter sent to his local party members, "he intends to honour his pledge":

If Lib Dems are in second place, Labour and Greens should step aside to give them a clear run.

Was that in his cringingly awful interview on yesterday's World at One? The one in which he couldn't stop saying how wonderful Theresa May has turned out to be, and in which he said how unworthy he was to even have thought he might have been of prime ministerial calibre ... but that after a few weeks on the back benches he has learnt his lesson and is now available for promotion? Yuck!

It reminded me of those Spitting Image scenes, with the Cabinet licking Thatcher's feet.

Back to the OP,I heard he was just resigning the Tory whip, and standing again as an Independent.

It is, after all, the only way that the Tories would hold onto the seat after having made the decision to expand Heathrow.
