Yucatan peninsula Mexico

Discussion in 'Personal' started by nataliesennett, Jul 24, 2011.

  1. Off on holiday for 2 weeks to Yucatan peninsula, just wondered if anyone had been, and had any advice for me please.

I've done the usual research on the web, but thought some of you may have some more advice. Is it worth hiring a car? Are there any places that I should go that I might not have heard about?

    Thanks in advance.

I have been and really enjoyed it. We thought Mexico was more expensive than other central/ south American countries. We loved Merida, a lovely bustling little town, with a fair few day trips to do from the area. We stayed in Luz en Yucatan, (no1 on Trip Advisor at the minute) It was our favourite, even nicer than the all inclusive we stayed in, in Playa Del Carmen. http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g150811-d305571-Reviews-Luz_En_Yucatan-Merida_Municipality_of_Merida_Yucatan_Peninsula.html
Although of course you must do Chitchen Itza, it is highly comercialised and was a bit of a let down, there are much nicer less well known sites areound the area. We really liked Palenque in the Chiapas region. (The poorest part of Mexicio) We had a fab time in Mexico, you will really enjoy it. We spent about 2 weeks touring around the Yucatan and still feeel like there is another trip!
  4. Take an umbrella and American dollars as well as local currency. Be prepared to tip if you want anything- $1 bills very good for this. Didn't hire a car went on an organised mini bus tour and some of the roads were very poor. We ended up replacing a lot of tyres! Was a good few years ago mind.
