Year 9 Humanities GCSE coursework on the Holocaust top set

  1. Hi,
    I am an RE specialist, but teach Humanities AQA GCSE and have chosen the coursework title 'Why was there a Holocaust during WW2?' with my top set Year 9 class. I would like some specialist advice on this please from the historical perspective. Obviously I need to break it down into sections to deliver to the class and then get students to write up the different sections (2,000 words in total). This what is what I was thinking:-
    • What was the Holocast and where did it happen? Set the scene in the introduction
    • Background information - the Rise of the Nazis and the ecomomical /political state of Germany
    • The final solution - why the Jews? History of their persecution
    • Jewish persecution in Germany - stereotyping, prejudice through to discrimination in Nazi Germany
    • Life in the Ghettos and then transportation to concentration camps
    • Work/death camps - testimonals from surviviors.
    • Perpetrators / Bystanders
    • Why was the genocide not stopped?
    • Who helped the Jews?
    • Conclusion
    Have I missed anything out? Many thanks advance. J x

    Its a challenging theme, and it looks like you have a great deal already in there. If they are a top set class, they should be able to cope with the level of thinking that this will cover. Some other issues I have included in similar themes over the years mention that many of the acts outside Germany were not carried out by Germans,but 'supervised' by occupying Nazi forces, who encouraged local units to carry out the 'dirty work'. I have always tried to encourage pupils to describe the perpetrators as Nazis, and not Germans, just to keep a bit of balance.
    There are some great resources regarding this, the IWM has plenty of links. In addition, if you use films in your teaching, there are some good resources, although you will have to check them to see if your pupils will be OK with them and respond appropriately. Of course, Schindler's List, but there are others as well. The Devil's Arithmetic (More suitable for lower attainers) - Story is tosh but there are some very good bits related to what happens upon entry to a camp in the early stages of the construction of the camps in Poland, and The Pianist, although there are some quite unpleasant sections in it. In addition, one of the Forgotten Voices books, Forgotten Voices of the Holocaust, is recollections from survivors at all stages in the process, from 1933 through to post 1945. Thats quite heart wrenching at times, hardly surprising really, but there are also some quite heart warming memories in there too.

  4. Also suggest the film 'Sophie's CHoice'. It describes the depths that people were prepared to delve to save those they loved and the long lasting effects that had on people. Whilst the majority of those affected were Jews in Poland many Polish Catholics were affected to as well as those thought unfit such as Gypsies, homosexuals, twins, the physically and mentally handicapped. Mengele's book is also very interesting in his self-justification which is chilling in how detached he was as well.
    I was at school with the children and grandchildren of concentraton camp survivors. The stories they had were gripping. Being in concentration camp has had an effect on the generations which haave come after.
    Another angle is those who survived because they were musicians.
