Year 6 induction day - tutor hour ideas!

Discussion in 'Trainee and student teachers' started by Astralabe, Jun 27, 2008.

  1. Hey guys,

I am going into my new school on Tuesday to spend an hour with my future Year 7 tutor group. I know there is a simple activity that will be suggested (tour of the school, they fill in questions afterwards) but want to do something a bit more fun with them as well - am feeling a bit bereft of ideas this near to the end of my course (finish next Friday!)... can anyone help?!

    Thanks

    Astra xxxx

    Hey!

I'm going to play a sort of 'speed dating with them' - sit some at a table whilst others move around and they have 1 minute to talk to each other. Will give them some question ideas as they will then play bingo with the info they found out (match a name to a square - e.g. "who plays netball every week?", "who likes to watch heros?" etc).

As I have got them for an hour I thought I might also do a team work activity, maybe designing an egg lander (soemthing to safely land an egg when dropped from a certain height) using a select few pieces of materials.

    How are you feeling about being a year 7 tutor - I'm s*** scared!lol

  4. Thanks Laura - I like the speed dating thing - I need to remember they won't all know each other so that's a really good idea. I'm actually glad I got y7 rather than a sixth form or yr 11 group, at least we can put our stamp on them! Not quite sure about giving them the tour of the school next week though - that will be slightly hilarious since I've only been round it once myself!!

  5. I might also do something about me - various pieces of evidence that give them clues about me and what I like to do... like a pair of wellies, they find corroborative evidence in a bunch of carrots to see I like gardening and have an allotment, kind of thing..

  6. Youve got some fantastic ideas going on here - I'm hoping I will get a Yr7 tutor group too then I can try some of these ideas out they sound fun!

Astralabe - I love that idea. I think I'm going to spend my friday night finding some 'evidence' about things I like to do! How sad!lol

  8. When do you find out your tutor group wan2teach?

  9. Hopefully on Tuesday when I go in to see the Head of Faculty. Have already had a glimpse of my classroom which looked fab! Hopefully will be able to check it out properly on Tuesday - cant wait! Have you seen yours yet?

  10. Yep - I went in yesterday for a faculty INSET which my uni let me attend - my classroom really nice, lots of windows so very light and lots of storage space - think it will need a good tidy up over the summer though.

Faculty staff are really supportive - was a bit worried about the RE classes at KS4 I am going to teach but their SOW is really comprehensive fo non-specialists so no worries at all now! Gov + Politics A level is another story but its a new subject from September so can't really blame them for the lack of resources etc - will just have to roll my sleeves up and get stuck in! Are you purely teaching c-ship or other subjects as well?

  11. Ive been told mostly Citz but there will be some PSHE and if I do get a Yr7 tutor group they operate that Foundation year system where I wil be teaching my form the foundation subjects too!
I cant wait to explore my classroom though like yours theres plenty of windows and its quite roomy too so I can arrange seating plan how I want!
Don't envy you with the A level Govt & Politics but RE as well? Your specialism is History isnt it?

  12. Yep specialism is History - I've got a KS3, 4 and 5 History classes but also KS3 (just one yr 8 class), KS4 RE and KS5 Gov and POl - a LOT of exam classes! Need to get through a lot of reading this summer!!

  13. Crikey Astra! That sounds a heavy load! Wonder what they have in store for me on Tuesday! I hope they dont give me loads of subjects across the key stages - Citz has a wide enough range of topics as its is which I will need to brush up on during summer!
