Year 2 non fiction text lesson observation...HELP!!

  1. HI,
    Im stressing about what to teach a year 2 class for the unit non fiction information text. I was wondering if ran my ideas past people, I could get some feedback.
    Here's what I have so far:
    After discussing what non-fiction means and looking through a selection of books, I will set out key questions on the smart board for children to answer
    when working in 2’s.



    KEY QUESTIONS:


    Write down the title of your
    book.


    What is a Contents page? What is
    a Glossary? What is an Index?


    Does your non-fiction book have a
    contents page, glossary and index?


    Choose something to look at from the
    contents page.


    Did this page have a title, photo, diagram,
    different size fonts


    Look for a word that you do not know.
    Can you find the meaning of this word?

    Sounds like a good lesson, I like the idea of them finding out answers rather than being told what things are.

    Wish my year 2 class were all able to read those questions, especially from an IWB.

    And wish they were good enough readers to be able to figure out what a glossary.contents/index/etc are!
     
  3. I agree with the poster above - I like the idea of a lesson but think it may be a bit ambitious for Y2. My top group would be able to read/comprehend/answer those questios, but all of the others would need an awful lot of support. Even if they can read it I think you will get lots of children who are not yet independant enough to actually do that activity alone.

    How to I make this lesson better for middle and low ability??

    Could you have post its and children label the features they find? Sorting books/ pages from books into separate groups for fiction/ non fiction? Children talk to each other/ an adult about why they think a book is a fiction/ non-fiction book.
     
  6. Sorting books into fiction/non-fiction would be good - if you do this, make sure you are doing lots of vocabulary work and expanation of their choices.
    I find teaching non-fiction very tricky to make exciting, to be honest.

    Maybe sort a heap of books into two piles, fiction and non-fiction.

    Ask how they decided.

    Get them to look in the non-fiction and see what is the same about all of them (make sure in advance they do all have a contents, glossary, etc).

    Ask what each part tells us, get them to discuss in their group.

    Scribe their answers/decisions on large paper.

    Review each group's thoughts in the plenary and come up with a final definition for each part.

    We do focus group teaching so an adult with about 8 children, meaning we could lead this as a discussion. If you do whole class work, I'm not sure what you could do.

Half my issue with teaching non-fiction is that most children in Y2 are fairly confident with the difference between fiction/non-fiction, and understand what contents/index/glossary pages are from Y1. Whenevever we read an information book we discuss all of these things anyway, so spending a whole lesson focussing on this is a bit of a waste of teaching time, in my opinion.

    OBJECTIVE:

    of non-fiction texts.


    OUTCOMES:


    1. Note some features of non-fiction texts.


    2. Work in small pairs listening to others.


    3. Speak clearly giving reasons for their ideas.


    4. Make comparisons.


    INTRODUCTION:

    What
    is non-fiction? Look at a fiction and non book from my bag. What’s the
    difference?

    What
    does fiction and non-fiction mean? Write answers up on the IWB.


    ·
    Have a
    selection of fiction and non books. Hold up a sign saying words fiction and
    non. Invite children to hold up books and stand by the correct sign. Use a dictionary, cook book, animal book

    chdn are standing holding book ask: Which kind of book will I need to answer my
    questions? EG: What do lions eat? Where is Rome? What does the word ‘fragile’ mean?

    through the interesting non-fiction book. Will it start with ‘Once upon a time’?
    Will there be characters such as Little Red Riding Hood? Is this animal book
    going to have an animal that talks and wears clothes?

    Now I
    know what kind of book to use to answer my questions, how do I actually use the
    book? I don’t want to read the whole thing to find the answer to my question!
    Discuss features of non-fictions. What can you tell me about non-fiction books?

    through a selection of non-fiction books with a partner. Using post it notes,
    mark any features of non-fiction books they find and write what it is.
    Compare the difference between fiction and non-fiction books. Using
    writing books, write down their findings in 2 columns.
