Year 2 class assembly - An Island Home song?

Discussion in 'Primary' started by Lottie24, Apr 24, 2008.

  1. Anybody?? I've Googled until I can Google no more!

  2. Probably a bit old - I remember singing it at school!!

    Island In The Sun
    Belafonte/Lord Burgess

This is my island in the sun
Where my people has toiled since time begun
I may sail on many a sea
Her shores will always be home to me

    Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father's hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters, your shining sand

As morning breaks, the heaven's on high
I lift my heavy load to the sky
Sun comes down with a burning glow
Mingles my sweat with the earth below

    Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father's hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters, your shining sand

I see woman on bended knees
    Cuting cane for her family
I see man at the waterside
Casting nets at the surging tide

    Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father's hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters, your shining sand

I pray the day will never come
When I can't awake to the sound of drum
    Never let me miss carnival
    With calypso songs philosophical

    Oh, island in the sun
Willed to me by my father's hand
All my days I will sing in praise
Of your forest, waters, your shining sand

  3. HOw weird! I was just thinking about this thread, as I was racking my brains for inspiration! You could do songs that originate from islands, like the Carribean, and there are plenty of Scottish folk tunes to do with the isles or boat songs - Skye, Arran etc. If you wanted to make your assembly more unique and get your class creating, you could write your own islandy song. What about taking a familiar song, and adding new words?

For instance, to the tune of 'A hedgehog is very prickly'...(or something)

    We're living on an island,
    We're living on an island
    We're living on an island
    We've got an island home

There's water all around us, (x3)
    We've got an island home

    Er....other islandy things x 3
    We've got an island home

I'm sure your children could think of something (much!) better. Soz if this is no help at all!

  4. Wow, thanks for those.
I was trying to think of Island in the sun one for ages... I remember doing that in my own assembly as well!
Writing out own is a fab idea, I don't know why I'd not thought of it! I have some very imaginative chn as well so they will love that.
Thank you both so much :)

  5. We did a similar sort of assembly last year in Year 2 - I gave the class the job of finding songs, then we had a vote and ended up dancing and singing to Vengaboys 'Ibiza' (sorry, don't know the proper title - but it's an upbeat singing about going to ibiza... back to the island... fly away... on venga airways - something along those lines anyway!) Wasn't my choice, but the children loved it, and they liked being able to have a say! We also found some traditional hawaiian music, looked at video clips of traditional hula dances (including a brief look at Lilo and Stitch!) and made up our own hula style dance. Worked well.

  6. Speed Bonny Boat, over the Sea to Skye?

  7. tree81 - that sounds like fun! We had a go at writing our own song today, they loved it! I will def be giving classes more choice about what we include in the future. Thanks.

Polli - I don't know why I didn't think of over the Sea to Skye! Thanks.
