Year 11 School Prom

Discussion in 'Secondary' started by Delabela, Jul 6, 2012.

1. I've been talked into going to the Year 11 prom at the end of term. I was actually looking foreward to it, as I've never been before (I'm an NQT). Until a senior member of staff told me it's not a good idea to actually stay for the sit down meal part. Someone please tell me why? Is it because the kids are likely to have no table manners? Is it because the food is usually awful? What are the positives and negatives of attending prom from a teachers point of view?

I am not sure why they'd specifically say that about the meal. I have been to many proms and always had a lovely evening, although it's always been a buffet kind of thing. Could it be a subtle way of telling you you're not allowed to eat the food as a member of staff?

OK Delabela,
Firstly, is this organised by the school, or by the students? If it is the latter, and not organised by the school then stay well clear.
However, if it is a school endorsed prom then if you want to go you should.
Positives
Great to see all the students feeling like they've achieved an important milestone in their lives.
Enjoy being a bit of a 'legend' and students who you would least expect saying you were an OK teacher after all.
Negatives
You are still responsible for these students. If they are drunk then someone in authority will need to phone a parent.
I wouldn't drink alcohol - messy!!
Your dancing could be secretly filmed and spread across Youtube.
Be prepared to see and hear things that in any other circumstances would be deemed inappropriate.
As an NQT I would tread carefully.
Have a nice time [IMG]

5. I'm not sure either. I've already paid for the meal, so I'm guessing it can't be that. I guess I shall have to see. Thanks for the reply!

6. The school is organising the prom, and I believe it has taken several months worth of planning. So it should be a good evening. Don't worry - I won't be drinking as I have to drive myself home at the end of the night. And I DON'T dance - especially not if there are camera's about. I have no sense of rhythm or co-ordination.

And thank you for your reply Ferris - you're a righteous dude!

Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
Just turn up to the prom in the 1961 Ferrari, two-fifty GT California, and you really will be a legend!!

I always go to our prom (in fact I am given the job of snapping all the kids as they arrive in their big entrances! Best one this year was the girl who arrived in a Jag. However the jag had a 50 motorcyle Hells Angel escort! It certainly stopped the traffic!

I can't believe you've had to pay for the meal!! Surely the school needs some staff to be present at the prom. If you're 'on duty' a free meal would be nice!
Bet you'll enjoy it!

If you have paid for the meal then surely you eat it! If you can't eat a meal then refuse to pay for one!
