Levelling endless pieces of work is not very inspiring, although worthwhile. What about giving each member a sub-level, they then study the descriptors for that sublevel and then have to produce a piece of writing that characterises that level? You could make it more light hearted by giving them a topical theme - Letter to Santa - "What I want for Christmas" or newspaper report on the strike. You could then share them out and trry and guess which level is which?
I dont know if i'd want to be asked to produce writing at a staff meeting (to be honest, just because it sounds like far too much effort after a days teaching!) but I can see why it would be a good idea!
I like your original idea of tables with different levels on.
