Will you be doing any reading tonight?

This year I have set myself the challenge of reading the '100 best books to read before you die' as stated by the BBC. I am still stuck on number 2: Lord of the bloomin Rings but will plod on with it tonight.

Have you got a link to the "100 best books to read before you die" it's the sort of idea that always makes me laugh.

Apparently the BBC reckons most people will have only read 6 of the 100 books here.

    2) Add a '+' to the ones you LOVE.

    6?
I read the top ten of your list and have read all of those (and in some cases 2 or 3 times!). I'm a bookworm though - my friends still pull my leg about disappearing behind a book.
Anyway I'll have to look at the rest of the list and come back.

I am not much of a book worm. I have read 24 of them but have taken on the challenge to try and motivate myself to read more...we shall see!

  8. 28-quite pleased with that!

  9. Sorry, couldn't be bothered to write out the whole list, just did a tally and it came to 89. I didn't count The hobbit or Lord etc which I started and abandoned (hated them) or Midnight's Children. Be honest - do you know anyone who actually finished it?

    89 - wow!?!
Am not enjoying Lord of the Rings at all hence why i am making such slow progress.

  11. 45 for me.
Some of my favouries are in there: To Kill a Mockingbird and The Faraway Tree series.
Some of them have left me very disturbed: A Fine Balance and Jude the Obscure.
Some of them I have loathed: Catcher in the Rye (Read it because I felt I ought to) and The Hobbit ( Had it read to me whilst I was at primary school)

I firmly believe that life is too short to read LOTR - one of the few books I woudl ever recommend film over book - I couldn't be bothered watching the fils either though.
I've read 44 on the list, 15 of which I really loved but also a couple of stinkers - including The Da Vinci Code which someone lent me quite soon after it came out and led me to believe was worth reading.
I've read quite a bit of the Bible and Shakespeare but can't claim to have read whole book of either - and stopped half-way through Les Miserables a couple of years ago and never went back to it.

  13. Agreed. I can't stand this sort of thing. I was absolutely insensed when this was voted the best book ever written (or something like that) a few yeas ago.

I've read 54 on the list but tonight will be continuing with my Timothy Mo novel : The Redundancy of Courage. It took me a wee while to get into, but now I'm really enjoying it.
Anybody read much of Colin Thubron?

Not sure how to work out my total....do you add 1 for each (+) and subtract one for each (-)...but then what about the (X) and (*) do they not count?
And what is the total supposed to signify?
I'm confused that the Complete Works of Shakespeare are on as well as Hamlet...(I haven't read the complete works but have read most)
And as usual with these lists, I'm surprised at some that didn't make the list. How could The Go-Between miss out on aplace and yet some of those other titles got in?
