World Book Night - free book!

Discussion in 'Personal' started by Keira, Mar 5, 2011.

  1. As some of you may be aware tonight is World Book Night. A little more about it
here if you are not familiar:

    http://www.worldbooknight.org/

    I'm
lucky to have been selected as a Book Giver for the event and as such I have
copies of Erich Remarque's 'All Quiet on the Western Front', a classic account
of the war from a German point of view, which later inspired the film (or films
if you include the 70s one). More on the book here:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Quiet_on_the_Western_Front

    As
part of this event I have Four (4) copies of the book to give away here on the
    forum.

The books will be given to the first four UK Members who post below asking for a copy of the book on the following conditions:

    1.They live in the UK
    2.Each book
has a code number in the back; log on the World Book Night website and register
    that you have the book.
    3.Read the book! (obviously!)
    4.Having read the
book re-post here to pass it on to someone else or give it to someone else where
you live, at your work place etc and ask them to log on to the World Book Night
website to register it, and hopefully they will pass it on, too.

    The
latter is part of the long-term ethos of the event to keep passing the books
    on.

When the first four people have posted below I will contact them by PM for
their home address and post the book to them early next week.

  3. I do love All Quiet ... one of the best ever books

However I have already got my copy of One Day by David Nicholls from a friend doing the same so it would be greedy of me to get a second book, especially since I already own it

    But thanks [IMG]

That's a lovely gesture but like RF I already own it.
    Have a smashing evening.

  5. I put my name in the hat to be a giver but was unsuccessful...
I'd love to be part of the night though... so happy to take one off your hands... [IMG]
    thanks

  6. Thanks everyone - it is a wonderful book, and I can't wait to hand out copies to some of the boys at school on Monday.

Thanks tafawke - will PM you in a while for an address.

  7. I too have books to offer as part of the world book night.
I have 4 copies of "The Curious Incident of the dog in the night-time" so if you fancy one pm me.
Good thread Keira. I was just about to start something similar.

  8. I would like a copy of the curious incident as I have not read it

However, as I have had one of the others I will step aside if you have a lot of requests Bauble [IMG]

  9. No worries RF just pm me and i'll pop one in thepost. :¬))

  10. Two copies of 'All Quiet on the Western Front' left
    'This
book is to be neither an accusation nor a confession, and least
of all an adventure, for death is not an adventure to those who
stand face to face with it. It will try simply to tell of a generation
of men who, even though they may have escaped shells, were destroyed
    by the war.'
If you want to read on, post a request...

Hi, Keira - Not one I've read - so would love to receive a copy and join in with World Book Night if possible Thanks![IMG]

  12. I have PM'ed you MsKE -

One copy of 'All Quiet' Left
    'Comrade,
I did not want to kill you. . . . But you were only an idea to me
before, an abstraction that lived in my mind and called forth its
    appropriate response. . . . I thought of your hand-grenades, of
your bayonet, of your rifle; now I see your wife and your face and
our fellowship. Forgive me, comrade. We always see it too late.
Why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that
your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same
    fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony—Forgive me, comrade;
how could you be my enemy?'

Thanks keira that has made my Saturday night!

  18. Ooooh two fantastic free books on offer!....thankfully (as I missed the thread last night!) I already have both All Quiet On the Western Front (well, I have Im Westen Nichts Neues!) and Curious Case....
They are both terrific reads. I know the lucky recipients will enjoy them!

  19. Perhaps I am being REALLY dim but I cannot see how to register my book on the site

  20. There has been a right *** up by the organisers of WBN. Most givers have got books but no registration numbers and so are registering the books with Bookcrossing .com .
You will find that "Curious" has been registered with bookcrossing.
