Workplace Bullying - A19pb's Hotlist - July 08 - Might be useful to some.

Discussion in 'Behaviour' started by a19pb, Jul 8, 2008.

  1. oopsa

There is no easy answer and to make normal good people who are always prepared to give the benefit of the doubt, turn the other cheek, accept the voice of authority without question and to always readily accept 'obvious' explanations aware of the way workplace bullies really operate requires requires that people are made aware of how the bullies operate.

Schools, charities, healthcare and churches have lots of 'good' people who are easy prey for anyone with narcissistic or sociopaths tendencies. The bullies often present as being knowlegable, confident and 'believers' when the reality is that they know and use the appropriate jargon, they do have a good general knowledge (but often lack depth or experience) and they are able to make people listen. Importantly they do not actually care about anyone but themselves. The establishment, staff and customers/pupils/congregation are seen as things to be used.

They often easily get to positions of relative power within the establishment.

Once established, they then cheat and abuse - the best staff get either dominated and controlled or discredited and damaged, weak individuals are given responsibility and the aims of the group (school, church, hospital) while being presented to the public (and to the group)as being served are actually badly damaged.

Serial bullies already know and continually perfect their craft. They understand how to play on 'good' people's emotions when manipulating, grooming or targeting. They play dual roles of Mr Nice & Mrs Nasty with ease. They can make people think they are actually supporting their targets - sometimes even the target themself is fooled. I have nothing to teach them here. They can present the antithesis of the truth in public with such conviction that most of their audience accepts what they say without question and/or is sufficiently intimidated and/or isolated so as not to challenge what are falsities.

The way forward is to continually spread the word amongst all teachers and to reinforce the view that to create an anti bullying culture requires that everyone recognises the signs and the causes of a 'Hostile' environment. When they recognise the symptoms, they then should establish the source and the target while at the same time being vigilant to the possibility that they themselves are being used to invalidate / bully others.

Re the view that my posts / views might actually make things worse for individuals who are being targeted, I see where you are coming from but this would require that the bullies themselves read this stuff. and that the targets don't.

A few people have previously said and done things to 'encourage' me to call it a day. I thought they were wrong - I know they were wrong. There has been a change on the forums in the past seven months. People are now warning others of the traps that are set and the intention of nasty behaviours. I know that many people will continue to benefit for a while yet.

Any support that will benefit others is as always much appreciated. (e.g. getting others to look at the many posts and to add those that you relate to to your hotlists so that you can point others to them for support).

  2. Why would any person wish to stop another trying to do the right thing?

It's a puzzle, isn't it... unless you know how the pieces can be put together.

Silence is the bully's best friend.

Silencing others is the bully's ultimate aim.

Silence is the target's worst enemy.

  4. I havn't tried yet but hope that it will still be possible to find post using the Search feature.

  5. The search doesn't seem to find the titles. Does anyone have a workaround?

i.e. previously it was possible to cut / paste a thread title into the search box then find on 'all forums'. All forums does not seem to be an option.

  6. There are lots of links relevant to workplace bullying in the previous post. The subject should concern everyone so that bullyingbehaviours are recognised and countered.

  7. Lots of threads which will be of use to some.

  8. Update for October -- The hotlist feature on the new site still isn't working properly so the following posts are in no real order but most have some relevance to understanding and combatting bullying in the workplace.

Teaching conditions in Victoria are better than in the UK, and some of the things that occur in the UK would be illegal in Victoria. However, our schools are not free of bullying. My own philosophy is that you should stand up to bullies. Otherwise they will continue to get away with it. My experiences are probably of limited relevance outside of my state, because the culture, the conditions and the institutions are different. However, I recorded some of them at:
    http://pub39.bravenet.com/forum/3280197123/show/618849.

  12. Is it just me who looked at some of these posts when they originally came up and thought "Hang on. This is only one side of a story. I wonder what the other parties mentioned might say?"
One person's claim of being bullied, for instance, maybe someone else's efforts to get them to do their job properly.
    Perhaps.

It is the willingness of presumably decent people like yourself to believe that there are 'two sides to every story' which ensures that workplace bullies can become serial abusers.
Most often, workplace bullies are more senior than those they bully. They work behind a mask of deception and spin which suggests that they are decent normal caring people like those they groom so that when they target individuals and it comes to the 'two sides to every story' thing, normal but uninformed people tend to give more weighting to the bullies lies than the unembelished truth as told by the target. THis is further complicated by the fact that a lot of what narcissistic or sociopathic bullies do is so antisocial that normal people cannot believe that anyone, never mind the bully could do such things.
Re the forums - people come on here feeling *** not understanding how they don't seem to be coping. Hopefully, some are finding the information they need here and leave better able to deal with their situations. If, as you seem to suggest, some are either imposters or are themselves the real problem - so what ?
