Considering how many are catching the virus in US the number of deaths doesn't seem so high but I suppose it will rise. I can't see how they're going to get out of the situation they are in apart from the virus is just going to have to makes its way through the population with all the consequences that will bring. Its a desperate situation.

Look up what "federalism" means and you will have your answer.

Perhaps the USA is aiming for herd immunity quicker than everyone else? Eventually, well fairly soon really, the only two types of people in the USA will be those that have had it and lived and the dead.

Immunity appears to die away at 3 months.

    Not a good idea...

If so, we need to get on with living with the risk.

Yes, but with sensible measures in place, like face masks, distancing and some travel restrictions.

The virus will be beaten one way or another. It may weaken as it evolves. It may just "disappear". Or we may get a usable vaccine. If we don't take such measures, we may well end up with large numbers of dead people with no respite. People will then isolate themselves etc and if it's done on an ad-hoc basis like that, we might end up in a real mess.

If we could drive cases right down, like NZ, Scotland, and many other places, we could get back to something close to "normal" quite quickly.

I would say the vast majority of politicians everywhere are corrupt. The thread is about America hence the use of the word.

Nobody wants to work in a life threatening situation. They have to work because there has been little financial support for them. Wall Street has been bailed out and $740 bn has just been allocated to the military. The ordinary American received $1200 and 30% missed their June housing payment. You must have seen the queues for foodbanks and this in the richest country the world has ever known. I read the other day that it would cost $30bn a year to eradicate world hunger. This is chicken feed to the USA yet they can't even look after their own people and keep them safe. Absolutely disgusting. The only reason they are not talking about imprisoning these barstewards is because MSM is complicit in this oppression and the Americans are so indoctrinated they can't see what is happening to them. If 1 million people die in the U.S. because of Covid most Americans will still say Trump did a good job. That's how far gone they are.

It is not just Democrats who are corrupt and incompetent. All the politicians are. You don't think the Republicans are any better do you? It's a one party state and that party is controlled by big corporations.

Testing is completely unavailable to many americans, which makes you wonder what the true number of infected could possibly be

Several governments seem to be quite happy with the prospect of the poor, the old and the sick shuffling off and thereby enriching the coffers by their departure.

California now has a bigger economy than Britain, hardly bankrupt. It creates more wealth than any other US state, so contributes massively to the US economy. CA must be doing something right. People are drawn to it from the rustbelts and economically weaker states elsewhere. Perhaps California should halt freedom of movement to stop your mentally ill immigrants from moving there who become a burden on stretched state resources.

Or maybe it'll be here for the long haul, like the common cold and influenza.

The power of Trump. He's certainly boosted the USA., just a shame that California's such a dump.

Why is America not locking down?
    • because Donald Trump has the mental capacity of a cracked toilet seat
    • because his officials are too spineless to punch him in the mouth every time he threatens to open it
    • but most of all because, if a president like Donald Trump is psychotic [which he is], he can gainsay article 25 of the constitution [the one designed to remove a president who goes insane] simply by denying that he is mad [unbellevable but true].

Not the whole story Britain has grown slower than democrat run California and the pound has fallen meaning it has overtaken us. Yes, the USA has a problem with waste management. We do too, do you have fly tipping where you live?

Why would you assume that? Is it not possible to despise both in your universe?
The reason that Clinton lost to Trump in 2016 is that she thought everyone took her at her own valuation of herself. Anyone with so little self-esteem as to stay married to that appalling husband of hers cannot be trusted to run a country. How bad do you have to be to come second to a dreadful person like Trump?
