This has already been discussed at some length in the "The old blue passport" thread, where I pointed out that nobody makes fun of the RNLI just because it is staffed by volunteers.

JUST IMAGINE the kind of person who would volunteer to do any kind of voluntary work. Do we sneer at special constables, for instance? Do we sneer at volunteers who help with crowd control at football matches?

It probably will only be a matter of time before job seekers over 60 will be made to do it as a mandatory work placement or be subject to benefit sanction.

Reminds me of that wonderful scene from the original "Reggie Perrin" where Leonard Rossiter was telling Jimmy what sort of people would be attracted to join his private army.

Bit difficult to see the boats coming ashore if you live somewhere like Birmingham, though. ;)

Will they be issued with a M134 minigun and copious 7.62x51mm ammo along with permission to shoot anyone who answers the challenge "Advance and be recognised" in a foreign accent?

    :)

Given that the government have said that they will have no powers to interrogate or arrest suspects, nor will the volunteers" be involved in Immigration Enforcement", I doubt if they'll be given much more than a pencil and notepad to record sightings.

Wouldn't some quality CCTV perform much the same function then?

That costs money: volunteers are free.

I have to say it's difficult to see what they might do. I think most illegals are students and others who have overstayed their visas, and are picked up by raids on the premisers of cheap employers. Can't easily see how volunteers could help with that. Basically, the UK needs to keep better tabs on people - but that is very much against the British psyche.

There was an implication that seeing someone on an otherwise deserted shore might put off a boat from landing, but I think the number that make their way to Britain in small boats is not large. I think some still come hidden in lorries on ferries, but that really needs specialist equipment, dogs and the like - difficult to see how volunteers could be anything more than observors. I guess the trial, if it goes ahead, will reveal what can be done.
