I just listened to I Will Always Love You on youtube. It always nrings a tear to my eye. How sad it is that sepne so musical, accomplished and beautiful could throw her life away.

And yes, I know she could be a bit of a hooter once the song went up a bl00dy semitone. But still, how wonderful she was.

Shirley Bassey is still available, and not a drama queen.

I did not like either version. Too showy, too sentimental, too vom inducing. (Typical C&W song in fact)

Malcolm Gladwell of Revisionist History did a podcast about why country music makes people cry, and even if the genre makes some puke the podcast is brilliant. It's so, so good.

It has a plastic, expensively buffed, on-the-sleeve, don't-look-behind-the-scenes heart.

Country & western. Indeed, some remarkably good music to be had.

I love Dolly and I was never a big fan of Whitney, other than thinking her very beautiful when she was young; but I absolutely hate that song, especially WH's eardrum-piercing rendition.

A late colleague's wife had it played at his funeral. Hellish.

And yet so many people love it.

I like both kind of music: heavy and metal.

    Whitney had an amazing voice.

Yeah, she had some great pipes.
Like many african-american signers, she learnt her craft in church choirs, which is real teamwork and trains the vocal chords and musicality, and performance.
Kids today just want to be instantaneous stars.

I also am not a fan of Whitney Houston - too shouty for my liking.
There is a new brand of country music, known as Hot Country, and some of it is quite palatable. Good artists, in my opinion, are Rascal Flatts, Keith Urban, Dirks Bentley, Brett Young, Luke Coombs, Cole Swindell and Jason Aldean. There is also a dedicated radio station called, bizarrely, 'Chris Country'.
