I have been charged with the introduction of GCSE Business and Communication Systems as from September 2011 and was wondering which specification people felt was the most engaging and of interest to pupils. My pupil base will be a mixed level and I have carefully looked through each of the three main specifications and have reached the following conclusions but would like additional input from those actually delivering the course: AQA Specification seems to focus too much upon the information systems element of the course and provides very little opportunity for the teaching of much business related material. I like the prospect of a practical ICT exam but would consider the lack of business material to hinder my enjoyment in delivering the specification. EDEXCEL The specification is almost the complete opposite of the AQA equivalent and focuses very strongly upon the business studies element, Infact, I felt that the volume of material to be covered was substantial and possibly too much given that there are two examination papers. I did not see an equal balance between business and communication systems and the lack of a practical ICT based examination was a negative. OCR This specification would initially seem to offer the best balance of business and communication systems. The course provided a practical ICT element and the controlled assessment seemed to provide a realistic amount of time for both the research and subsequent write-up. The course has a clear divide between the business and communication elements and this would enable it to be delivered via two teachers (one a business specialist and the other an ICT specialist). Any additional thoughts please?
