In a sleeping bag under a sheet of tarpaulin in 3 foot of snow in Germany while on exercise. It was bloody freezing.

Sorry mate, you have misunderstood the question.

The question was "Where is the worst place you have slept?" not "Where is the centre of the Universe?" ;)

Under a bridge over a dried-up riverbed near Cartagena in Spain in Spring 1973. I was with three friends hitch-hiking over the Easter break (from sporadic language agency work in Madrid) and we got dropped off just outside the town late at night. We took it in turns to stand watch.

A drainpipe, it wasn't too bad until it started raining, I was thinner in those days too.

A night high on a mountain in the Atlas range when we underestimated the length of the route. We decided the descent ahead was a bit tricky and best tackled in daylight.

It was cold but the descent in the early dawn the following day was pure magic.

I slept under my car bonnet once which was pretty uncomfortable, but at least it was easy to get up oily for work.

In a neighbour's wardrobe after her husband came home from the pub early and kept getting up to use the loo.

I was going to say something similar, in a foxhole in some snowy UK forest and waking up with my hair frozen solid. Although on the floor of waterloo station waiting for the first train was close (but it was impossible to sleep)
