Apart from in Claire's?
I had mine done at a tatooing and piercing place. Needle is more hygenic than gun as there are no parts where bacteria can grow and are new each use. They actually used a special piercing needle, which is hollow, so punches out a hole. This leaves a hole that is a tiny weeny bit bigger, which they say is better, because as it heals it gets smaller. This way, they are less likely to close up when there are no earring in, and you can wear earrings with a larger bar.
Also they put in short bars with a ball on each end or hoops, which are easier to move for the six weeks that you have them in initially, meaning they don't scab up etc.
Is it from this practice that the term "ear piercing scream" was derived?
Ditto. The first was done with a needle - got infected. Second with a gun - no problems. I had my nose done at a specialist tattoo/piercng place and everything was fine. (Tiny, tiny stud, before you all make disgusted noises!)
Definitely somewhere where they do it while you wait ...
