what am I missing???
No matter what the writing genre they always need good descriptive skills so do plenty of that!
report, instructions, recounts
Most importantly give them opportunities to practice mixed genres!
I'd say, just teach them to write and don't let the children think it only matters if it's what they're going to be tested on! (All right, so you don't but there are those that do.)
And, OK, I'll fall for the spelling wind-ups - trying to be helpful, just in case....
If you're telling children the difference, it's (to) practise [verb] and (a/some) practice [noun].
(All right - the correct abbreviation for national curriculum tests is "NCTs". You surely do know that. "SATs" - different thing altogether finished about fifteen years ago.)
