What to do in spare time?

I'm going to be working in supply until I can get a full time post (hopefully September). I'm anticipating a few days off every now and then and especially over the summer I'll have a lot of time to kill.

I'm trying to think of what I can do in my spare time. I like to be busy and I get bored quite easily! I've had a think about what might be 'beneficial' to myself/career. All I have thought about so far is learning a language.

    Any suggestions?

If you're hoping to return to full-time teaching I'd use some time to do some personal research into current educational practice / changes. Certainly what i did when not working. You can even put it down as 'personal CPD' on an application.

You could try gathering together some resources, even making some of your own.

Volunteering? I quite fancy volunteering in a charity shop, but not enough free time, sadly.

Learning a language is a good idea.

Look up courses in professional development for teachers. You can do some free courses at www.futurelearn.com

    Knit! It's great for coding.

Also there are CPD courses on here.

I would think about a way you could run a business on the side while you're doing supply work. You might find it invaluable for the future.

Use the summer holiday to do all the things you'd like to do later in your full-time teaching career but won't have any time for. Spend as much time as possible in the sun, so you develop a strong memory of what it feels like - you'll need it. Savour the moments where there aren't at least seven other things that you should be doing instead, and most of them pointless. :)

If you've opted for Supply you may have more spare time than you imagine - I speak from experience.

Just enjoy the luxury of having spare time, as you won't have any when you start teaching.
