Quick one for any Primary School Teachers or Literacy Specialists. What time do you recommend teaching Phonics for Reception and KS1 children? And Why?

First thing in the morning. They are more alert and when we left it til later we would get engrossed in other things so it would become rushed.

I teach Reception and have tried a number of different times for Phonics. From my experience the time of day doesn't matter so much as having a set time slot that doesn't end up getting squeezed out or rushed through. We currently do 20 minutes just before lunch. Although initially I was worried they might be too tired, they seem to like having focused learning time after a long period of independent play. First thing in the morning worked well last year, but only if the lesson is followed by independent play; if you try to follow it with another type of input, concentration starts to fail.

It doesn't really matter when as long as you teach it.
