This thread has a better title, I hope.
Many a mickle maks a muckle.
Bad things happen to good people and the best revenge is to live well.
You can take a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
That was from the horse's mouth for sure!
The darkest hour is just before the dawn.
Handsome is as handsome does.
The dawns never last for long
Never be sure of a man who wears slip on leather shoes.
For me one of the most important things is as my signature says
This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man. Shakespeare's Hamlet
The other big influence on my life is the comments is a poem by John Donne
No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend's
Or of thine own were:
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
showing how important it is that we look as ourselves as 'part of the whole' and how anything we do has effects for others- we cannot afford to be selfish and think only of ourselves.
Sometimes it's better to keep your mouth shut. Not the biggest pearl of wisdom, but pretty valuable.
I was just about to type the same 'pearl'
I'd have saved myself a lot of bother if I'd remembered it when it was important.
But you proved your point: Just wait for someone else to say it first.
Pearls only form because of an irritation.
Never eat anything bigger than your head.
If you're going to have one, have a big 'un.
Don't put anything smaller than your elbow in your ear.
Somedays you're the pigeon, somedays your the statue.
Ah I never realized that comes from "No man is an island", nor the exact words. It is a lovely poem. I might use it on one one of celebobit threads...
Reminds me of ' Better to remain silent and be thought a fool
than to speak and remove all doubt'.
Thanks for this one for some reason I had forgotten it.
I don't subscribe to that bon mot. Worrying about looking a fool is for fools of a higher order.
