What is the point of middle management meetings?

I seem to remember that many years back, a Head of Department meeting would involve discussions about common issues, where all HODs were able to set the agenda, chair the meeting, contribute, and decisions would be taken. These days, it's like sitting in a lesson taught by SLT with a seating plan (no, really!), group activities and nothing comes out of it. Does anyone feel middle management meetings useful? and if so, how do they work?

We have optional “curriculum meetings” for anyone in the school to attend t give their input into agenda items regarding the curriculum. It’s a good way for HoDs to know what the school is moving towards and helps to forward plan.

we have both - middle management and curriculum. The latter are very discussion based

We did have HoD meetings every week. Then a new Principal arrived and in her first whole school meeting asked which tasks/meetings we currently did were entirely needless.

HoD meetings were the first on the bonfire. We all see each other everyday - if we need to talk to each about something, we do it over lunch or grab five mins in the staff room.
