What is the average age of children leaving Reception in the UK

Discussion in 'Early Years' started by KL100, Mar 1, 2011.

  1. Hi, I am working abroad and our ages for FS1 and 2 have been altered slightly by the ministry for Education. When comparing our results to England we wanted to take age into consideration. Does anyone know the average age of children leaving Reception?

    Thank you!

Well it depends what date you want to count them as leaving reception (when they start year 1, or when they break up before the summer holiday), and whether children's birthdays are distributed evenly throughout the year, but you can work out whatever figure you need from the following information:
the reception year 2011-12 runs from early September 2011 to late July 2012. In England it will contain children whose 5th birthdays fall between 1 September 2011 and 31 August 2012.
These children will start year 1 in early September 2012.
So your answer will be somewhere around 5.5.
