What does a GTP course consist of?

Discussion in 'Trainee and student teachers' started by cathrynmann, Apr 11, 2011.

  1. I have just been accepted on a GTP due to start in September, at a gramma school for girls (many of whom are gifted and talanted). I have been working as an LSA for the past year with children on the SEN and am confident that I am able to teach but am concerned about my subject. I am worried as my degree is in Journalism and I have to teach English but I have not studied Shakespeare or very little other literature since I was at school and as I am in my 40's that's a good few years ago! I don't know anyone who has done a GTP and have no idea what it comprises of. Can anyone give me any advice as I am terrified of making a fool of myself as I know very little about the English curriculum?

One key area will be the self audit-this is where you self identify the areas you need further support. It is good that you have begun to think about this already. You need to visit the National Curriculum website and download the Ks3 curriculum. Find out which exam board the school use- normally it will be in the prospectus or department information- and also download the GCSE syllabus from exam board website.
You should ask the EBITT for a reading list and visit a bookshop ideally at the university to get hold of the set texts. You will have a busy summer reading schedule!
