What do you do in year 7?

Discussion in 'Religious Education' started by dianaprince, Apr 19, 2012.

  1. At the moment nearly all our year 7 is taught by non-specialists (even though there are actually enough specialist staff...but that is another moan)
The current SOWs need updating anyway and I think they are too hard for non-specialists. I will be off next year in maternity leave, so there will be no support for them teaching it.

I am thinking of changing the topics so that they are still good RE, but more straight forward for non-specialists. So probably thinking pilgrimage, places of worship, stuff like that.
What do you do in year 7 (I prefer thematic)
    Thanks

  3. Hi
    I moved posts this year and have done some changes for year 7... So we know do the following;
    What is religion?
Who are the key religious leaders?
What are we doing to the environment?
What does it mean to be a good person?
And if enough time... maybe a bit of P4C.
Took loads from what I used to teach and have schemes of work and power points to aid if you fancy any topics.

  4. At the moment we do Sikhism, environment and scared writings. But apparently this is all too hard for the non-specialists. We teach it combined with another subject, but this means we only get to do 3 units of 2 weeks each in the whole year. As I said another rant....

  5. We also teach as part of combined Humanities with non-specialists. We have 2 weeks a half term of distinct RE (5 hours a week) - so in this sense we are quite lucky with time allocation. To link with the other humanities subjects we teach thematically based around key questions:
    1. What does it mean to belong to a community (RE looks at belonging to a faith community and the impact this might have on a person's values and lifestyle)
    2. Do we have a responsibility to look after the world? (Creation and Stewardship)
    3. Do I have a responsibility to other people? (Good Samaritan, Charity and Fairtrade)
    4. What should we celebrate? (We look at Judaism and the Passover, the Sabbath Day and the importance of worship within religion generally)
    5. Should we ever change? (looking at how some religions - esp. christianity - have evolved and diversified and then initiation ceremonies and their importance)
    6. Why are some journeys special? (looking at pilgrimage)
Some of this has been uploaded on here, but if you want anything let me know

  6. We do:
Big Questions- Look at questions we dont have answers to etc
    Stone Age Religion
    Abraham to Moses
    Creation Myths

  7. Hi
I have made changes this year to try and make Yr 7 more appealing. I teach it and 2 non specialists. I start with the island (I got it off here from resources). My kids loved this and the creativity aspect and it is a fab way to engage challenging kids into RE as soon as they get to secondary school. I then did a basic introduction on faith and belief - lots of stuff on ghosts and superstitions. I then do founders like Jesus. Muhammad, Guru Nanak and the Buddha. Then a unit on Buddhism (I prefer thematic too really but chucked this into the mix as I have all the resources and enjoy the topic). I am presently doing pilgrimage - Christian and Muslim. Doing Lourdes this week. Then to finish I do a unit on film and faith. All resources for this are up loaded into the resources section.each unit is half termly and the kids seem engaged and staff like it. I am going to try and get more about God into it next year and i think I need more Islam too. It is fitting it all in! keep adapting it when I come across new stuff or have a moment of inspiration. it is always interesting to see what others do!
