What do you divide a number by to get 1?

Discussion in 'Mathematics' started by robyn147, May 11, 2011.

  1. Is it just me? When you have a question where you have to divide a number e.g. 5 and you need to make 1 - so you ask what do you divide 5 by to get 1? And it stumps them. They can divide 5 by 2 to get 2.5, they can divide 10 by 5 to get 2 but divide 5 by 5 to get 1? Nope. Turn it round - how many 5's make 5? Oh - 1!

  2. Well they do not know how many 1/7 there are in a whole one so tis is probably the same issue

  3. What stumps them is that they think it's a trick question and many are therefore reluctant to answer. Then the brighter ones start to apply some logical thinking and will usually come up with the correct answer.
