What constitutes a WOW lesson?

  1. Shot down again for not giving a wow lesson.
    Topic:Design a poster for a medieval party.
    starter:1 min thinking about the picture,2min share with buddy,3min class sharing.Success criteria shared,group work(clear roles),best work -raffle tickets,(20 min)
    plenary:present it the next group 2min,praise each other ,use post it notes.tell buddy one new learning about adverts.

    Not exciting enough for pm lesson.Should I have asked to design a dragon with blutac and use descriptive language instead?I didn't want boys going at each others throat fighting over blutac.
    Any thoughts on adding wow factor to the above lesson?

  3. Unfortunately many senior managers have bought this idea of a "wow" lesson, as you call it. Surely they should be looking for effectiveness not entertainment value? Ask them to demonstrate the sort of lesson they want - and then hear all their "wow" excuses for not doing it.

    You don't mention at all what your LO were - for me, regardless of what the activities were, 'wow' (and I would never use such a crass word) comes from seeing that the children have made progress with their learning during that lesson.
    If the whole point was to make something, that's not really learning - I'd want to see you able to demonstrate that they'd developed new understanding, knowledge and/or skills.
     
  5. I agree- designing a poster can have educational value but you do not tell us what the LO was- did you share with the chn what the learning aspect of their work was? Were they demonstrating their knowledge of the topic? Developing group work skills?
    Personally, for PM I would never do a poster lesson- maybe applying knowledge to designing a poster for end of lesson which they can continue with over the next few lessons adding new examples of learning but when its PM I always tweak my lesson to show off my range of skills and how I stretch the chn. Right or wrong PM is your chance to showcase yourself to SLT- these opportunities need to be grasped,

    Maybe you could have had a role play of a medieval party instead of making a poster for it? (I assume it was a history lesson, and you were recapping costume/food/entertainments/ etc of the period?)

    But you can plan for exciting and active learning. Making a poster wouldn't really come into that for me.
     
  8. posters? wow? I don't even think a 'draw what you know' lesson could be 'good'.

    Think of your LO and make it as exciting as you can.

    When I plan I know I'm competing with football/playing/socialising with friends, time at the park, favourite films and tv shows and exciting games on the Wii/DS.

    If we don't make it fun, exciting, interactive and real why would the children remember it?

    Whatever the observer finds exciting and one person's wow is another's OK ...or worse
     
  10. Hi. I have to agree with some of the other posts. Learning is the most important thing in the lesson. What are they learning, how are they learning, why are they learning and what next!

    Skills + content = outcome

    'wow' is whatever the observer wants it to mean in the context of downgrading your lesson in line with their notion (possibly preconceived) of what it is. I'm more than a little jaundiced on the issue, vide: http://becktonboy.blogspot.com/2011/02/lo-lo-whats-going-on-here-then.html
