Website you suggest to parents?

Discussion in 'Primary' started by dukeland, Jun 28, 2008.

  1. Hi, I am actually doing this for a friend, who has just been told she needs to compile a list of user friendly websites that parents can take their children on at home to help them (from yr 1- 6). She has Ofstead on Tuesday and the head has just sprung this on her so I told her I would see what I could do as her head is in a spin. If anyone can suggest any that would be great. Thank you so much.

Web sites for a Dynamic Curriculum v.39

The Internet can be used to enhance, extend and support both learning and teaching across the curriculum. Many excellent sites are now available suitable for use in Foundation Stage onwards. There are resources and ideas for the teacher; others are suitable for children to use. It is imperative though that the relevant sites are checked by the teacher not only to protect children from undesirable materials but also to decide if the content is relevant for pupils and cut down on wasted time with fruitless and frustrating searching. The Internet used wisely can be stimulating and exciting adding another dimension to teaching and learning.

Ask for a trial and evaluate for yourself before committing your school to a year's subscription. Troll

  5. Thankyou so much already! Troll, what can I say but 'wow', you have given her one less worry to think about now.

  6. I would recommend this one to your parents.

    www.stuff4teaching.com

They pay a small subscription. Resources are sorted by Key stage and subject, then they need to select PC (personal computer) and this means the resources are suitable for children to use on computers at school or home by themselves. They can access different links every week according to what topics they are studying in school that week. Or they can choose topics they think they need more work on.
    Brilliant!

  7. I think this is a great idea

  8. This is great - thanks!
I can add just one (as I was looking for more and I got them from this): www.footee.com - uses football to motivate children to learn maths, English, science etc. Only just found it - the games are good on interactive whiteboards (as I said in another post on another topic) whilst the kids seem to love using it at home (nothing to do with social networking (safe BTW) and fantasy football!!)

  9. Re above reply - 'got them from this' refers to all the wonderful links on this thread (as opposed to links on Footee - not sure there are any!).
    Just to clarify!

  10. Yes, thanks for this.

I'm a retired teacher, but retired isn't the right word! I've just spent five and a half years writing 900 new poems for children of all ages, encouraged greatly by the children in my local primary school. I've written the poems with rhyme, rhythm and lots of stories to help them develop phonological awareness, and to make the poems fantastic as performance poems, because even preschool children love learning and reciting poetry. I have made a wonderful website that has been recommended by all the main teaching organizations, contains no advertising at all, and where I display my poems. IIt is the biggest original poetry website in the world and in the three and a half years since I've made it 530,000 people from 146 countries of the world have been there, mainly parents and teachers taking poems to their children. Please, please, please recommend this website to your friend as rhyming poetry is so important to children.

You can reach the website by simply Googling: JOSIE'S POEMS

  13. Have you tried OpenReading.org?

  14. Hi there! Thanks for recommending Film Street - we've now pulled together Film Street, our filmmaking website, with our art and craft, book, and performance sites for kids, so schools now have all the free resources and interactives in one, safe place: www.culturestreet.org.uk Best wishes Culture Street
