We just had some horrible, truly horrible, artex removed from the top landing beam. Think Yule Log and then some. It was horrible. The ceiling was horribly artexed too.
So afterwards we saw the wooden beam in all its battered and scarred glory.
There were some odd marks. Like inverted v shapes overlapping. Spectacles. Other marks. Scratched or in one place burned into the beam.
Well I just did a quick search for "marks on old beams'. And I found that these are classic protection marks, to ward off evil and witchcraft. Apotropaic marks.
Our house was built between 1750 and 1820 ish. We have not been able to find out when.
    It really is quite exciting.

    Does it have woodworm

When you get the marks translated it will say "Kilroy woz ere"

Yes there are a few woodworm holes. It's an old house. It will stand for a bit longer.
It has had a lot of wear and tear.
    And artex.

We downsized from a beautiful Victorian cottage with beans, etc 4 years ago and I really miss the beans. We had lived there for 28 years and had to move because of husbands ill-health. In our bungalow (which is OK) we have artex everywhere. In our bedroom we have 3 different types of anaglypta! Slowly working through getting rid of it.

    I share your excitement!

well, it might not be that at all, the V shaped scratches and burns are often to make the airtex stick

We've got quite a few old beams which have been treated in this way before airtex or plaster was applied

lso, even the earliest date for your house sounds likely to be after any liklihood of marks made to protect from witchcraft.

If I could see your attachment, I would be able to tell you if the marks are the same as ours

Can you see it now. The beam was covered in lath then plastered and then artex was added to it. So not scored for the purpose of artexing. Only in one or two places as well.

You need to be careful with Artex. It contains asbestos.

The combination of the mini box with a cross in (IMG) and your signature made me smile.

Nope - still can't see it.

Yes old artex is nasty stuff. Best covered up really. But we have removed it before. And there are some bits that just fall off sometimes.

Just dont go into the cellar basement or attic! I bet your house is a secret treasure trove. In a previous house we lived in we found Victorian oil lamp holders and an old fashioned stove pushed back behind a wall covered with lino.

The marks on beams, posts and cross sections in oak framed houses are often there after a renovation or even before. They are often marks to indicate how the sections fit together. Basically Roman numerals: I II III IV V etc.

The artex on my stairs looks like it was done by a manic patissier on acid.

Have you ever had trouble with witches? Just wandering if it works.
