any ideas? They will complete an evap practical but then they need to model evaporation. Thanks
Rearrange the desks to make a 3 sided box and cram them in. Get them to model behavior in a liquid (move around at random but stay close) then pull the kids at the surface (open side) out one by one and send them on a journey round the lab. Occasionally push one back into the crowd as not all particals escape.
Then repeat on a small scale by allowing a small drop of ethanol to evaporate. (or igve them some hand cleanser and let it dry off their hands.

Top set groups. Why does the windscreen demister in a car use air that has gone through the AC system (in other words it is cold but very dry)?
Going back to Nuffield Co-ordinated Science days: a large flat tray (with sides), held at a slight angle. Arrange marbles in rows - solid. Start to provide energy (jiggle the tray GENTLY) - the particles remain in rows but vibrate. Jiggle a bit harder - the rows collapse, representing the solid melting - the particles can move about. Jiggle harder and some particles leave the "top" of the mass of "liquid" - evaporation. If some are removed, the amount of material will decrease; otherwise you might talk about a saturated vapour, where as many leave the surface as return to the "liquid". Lots of energy results in a "gas" - the particles move at random across the whole of the tray, bouncing off the walls of the container.
This used to be a "pupil demonstration", with enough kit for them to work in pairs. Guaranteed to cause mayhem and a lot of noise if not done in a VERY controlled manner!
