USA looking to buy Greenland?

Well I did a double take.

I mean sure, the USA has expanded by land purchase in the past, Louisiana and Alaska are the two obvious examples...

And yes it'd consolidate arctic territory as that region opens up to exploration... and as the ice sheet melts then the land under Greenland might be good for population resettlement....

    But still... not expecting that.

Reminds me of the mid-1990s suggestion that the USA purchase Siberia from Russia.

So could Greenland become the 51st state? Or the 52nd and they let in Puerto Rico and Greenland together?

Hey, let's rape and pillage more fossil fuels!

Trump will probably buy the Pacific next. And some air.

    Anyone asked the Greeenlanders? ;)

It is, after all, an autonomous part of Denmark and isn't part of the EU.

They'll ask them as much as they asked the Native Americans who lived in the Louisiana Purchase.

It went so well for them.

Hopefully we've moved on a bit as regards human rights since 1803...

Having read the article in the Grauniad I was unsure whether this is the USA attempting to buy it as Trump's idea, or whether it is Trump incorporated sniffing round to satisfy the greed of his Trumpness. Either way, there is obviously an ulterior motive. And surely if it were to be switched to a nearer neighbour the obvious new owner would be Canada? Have I read somewhere there are vast coal reserves in Greenland (the name "Greenland" being a Viking joke, if you read some history, and an interesting spin on climate change as that is thought to be what killed the original Viking settlers)? Of course there are still indigenous peoples there.

I'm not so sure we have, or at least that we haven't since regressed.

Nah, you're right... we have progressed... I'm just feeling super pessimistic ...

Just not convinced all our high and mighty principles really matter much when they come to be deep down tested ... thinking the use of torture in interrogation in the 'War on Terror'.

Maybe he's got mixed up with Iceland and thinks he's buying a frozen food retailer?

Maybe he saw the word 'green' and thought it'd placate the environmental lobby.

Perhaps he's hoping to restart the cold war and wants somewhere cold to fight it on?

It could set a precedent and we might see GB selling NI to the RoI without a vote.
