The number of police-recorded offenders aged under 18 committing homicides using a knife or sharp instrument rose by 77% from 26 to 46 from 2016 to 2018, the programme found after analysing Freedom of Information request responses from 29 out of 43 police forces.

Channel 4's Dispatches also found there has been a 93% rise in the number of children aged 16 and under being treated for stab wounds in England.

Surely it is time to increase stop-and-search tactics.

In London, they do use stop and search but its full of controversy as communities claim its directed at their communities.
It's not just a shortage of police to investigate, but also the motive as to why they are happening. Whether its a few individuals or many, gang led or drug led, or just a nutter who thinks its good for the thrill.
The other problem is when caught the punishment does not seem strong enough to deter.

Something has to be done, although bringing back a type of all edges sus law is bound to cause controversy among certain communities that in the past and possibly currently for whatever reason might and do get stopped more often.

It's a dilemma that even the some parents of knife crime victims might struggle to come to terms with while they simultaneously call for action... Though I'm often not sure what action they are indeed calling for.

Wellingborough young boys threaten girls with knife

Two boys, described as being aged between six and 10, threatened two girls with a knife, police said.

They said the boys produced a small penknife or Stanley-type knife and asked the teenagers to guess their age.

One girl was then pushed against a car and the other had the knife held to her face on Princess Way in Wellingborough on Sunday afternoon.

Northamptonshire Police said the boys were white, of skinny build and both had short mousey hair.

The girls managed to run away after the attack, which happened sometime between 15:00 and 17:00 GMT.

We all know a police car parked at a roundabout and even with the officers inside asleep, will ensure everyone drives carefully. By doing nothing bar being a presence, they save lives.

Same here, until we get real policemen and women walking the streets and parks etc, the real low life will feel as now, they rule and can do whatever they please.

Even if they're caught, because of their age, it'll be An Understanding Chat, some reference to their culture and difficult home circumstances, and off you pop now and be good.

At least Mrs May is certain that it is nothing to do with the much lower number of police officers.

    So that's all right.

Less police = more crime? Absolutely bonkers suggestion.

One practical way of preventing a large proportion of knife crime would be to make it a legal requirement that all knives have an embedded RFID tag that will trigger an alarm if anyone goes past a sensor at a shop / public building / school etc. Over time, most old knives will be replaced by tagged ones and anyone in possession of a homemade knife/weapon will automatically be found guilty of intent to harm.

Haven't you heard? They've appointed a "Knife Tsar". which of course means that the problem is as good as solved. After all, we no longer have a drugs problem in this country, thanks to the appointment some twenty odd years ago of a "Drugs Tsar".

The population of the UK is now the highest it has ever been so it stands to reason we will have more criminals than ever before. It seems obvious we need more police than ever before but guess what? We have less police than ever before. Oddly enough crime is increasing particularly in areas of the greatest population density. I presume all the politicians are feigning surprise because I cant see how they could be genuinely surprised by this. I'm spending some time at the foot of my stairs.

During the reign of David Cameron wasn't a law passed that said people caught in possession of knives would have an automatic prison sentence? I presume this was quietly scrapped when it was realized there was no room in the prisons.

Not when they literally sit and watch illegal activity and do nothing.

There are around 19000 fewer police now than in 2010.

Austerity and all that, I expect.

although there has been a recent increase in murders, it's still not as bad as it was 20-30 years ago (when the population was quite a bit smaller too)
