Unsure about subject specialism - English Lang

Discussion in 'Thinking of teaching' started by mrs_whit, Nov 17, 2011.

  1. I'm currently applying for GTP and PGCE for secondary teaching, with English as a specialism.
My concern is that my degree is in English Language, and I am increasingly worried that this will put me at more of a disadvantage teaching secondary English Lit than my BA Eng Lit counterparts would have teaching secondary English Lang. I don't even have A Level Eng Lang, so the last time I studied it was my own GCSEs (more than 10 years ago).
Does anyone have any a) reassurance that the Eng Lit content will be ok for me to teach or b) any suggestions on what to do / read in order to improve my chances?
I'm also concerned that I won't even get onto a course as I feel there is a bias towards Lit graduates. Has anyone experienced this?
