I am not really sure which union to join. I have been told by my school it is really important to join one (as a PGCE student I just joined them all the ones that came to an open day for free). However I do not, in any way support Labour, or the recent strike actions. I am actually pro academies and think the new Govt. proposals are mostly a good idea. Do any of the Unions lean more to the right? Or are any NOT affiliated in some way with the Labour Party?

Unions cannot force members to do anything. You still retain your free will and can choose what you do and don't do.

Guidance from unions is that people should not be asked to cover for striking colleagues and should not agree to do so. but it is only guidance, if it doesn't bother you then you can do as you please.
