  1. I am about to start a PGCE Secondary English course and would like your opinions on the best way to check the understanding of pupils in the classroom.
    Can anyone offer advice?

You'll learn this as part of your course, surely.

  5. Look at their eyes. Very clear and instant feedback. Also ask them to ask YOU questions about their tasks/topics/texts.

  6. You'll definitely do lots of work on assessment while you are doing your PGCE.
Ask them questions and listen to their answers.
Listen to them talking to one another when they are doing group work.
    Read what they write.
    Look at their faces.

Have at least some expectations of what you would expect them to do to demonstrate understanding, where possible. You can't unpick everything, but you can expect something.
