Ugly bug ball ideas.

Discussion in 'Early Years' started by timetogetup, Apr 16, 2011.

  1. Hiya, our new topic for the new term is minibeats, i would like to end the topic by holding an ugly bug ball in which i invite the parents. The only problem is, i dont really know what i can do at this ball!! I thought i could get the children to sing some songs but other than this, dont have any ideas. I thought the children could make masks and do something with them but not sure what! Any ideas greatly appreciated!??!

  2. We have acted out the Very Ugly Bug before, which the parents liked. You could do the bit with the children then let them socialise with some music and dancing?

  3. If you look at this link and these lyrics you could make a dance up using ideas from the video and get the audience to join in the chorus:-

Once a lonely caterpillar sat and cried,
To a sympathetic beetle by his side.
    "I've got nobody to hug,
    I'm such an ugly bug."
Then a spider and a dragon fly replied,
"If you're serious and want to win a bride,
    Come along with us,
    To the glorious
    Annual ugly bug ball."
    Come on let's crawl
    Gotta crawl, gotta crawl
    To the ugly bug ball
To the ball, to the ball
And a happy time we'll have there
    One and all
    At the ugly bug ball
While the crickets clicked their tricky melodies
All the ants were fancy-dancing with the fleas
Then up from under the ground
    The worms came squirming around
Oh they danced until there legs were nearly lame
Every little crawling creature you could name
    Everyone was glad
    What a time they had
They were so happy they came
Everyone was glad! What a time they had!
They were so happy they came!
    Come on let's crawl
    Gotta crawl, gotta crawl
    To the ugly bug ball
To the ball, to the ball
And a happy time we'll have there
    One and all!
    At the ugly bug ball.
Then our caterpillar saw a pretty queen
She was beautiful in yellow, black and green
He said, "Would you care to dance?"
    Their dancing led to romance.
And she sat upon his caterpillar knees
And he gave his caterpillar queen a squeeze
    Soon they'll honeymoon
    Build a big cocoon
Thanks to the ugly bug ball
    Come on let's crawl
    Gotta crawl, gotta crawl,
    To the ugly bug ball
To the ball, to the ball
And a happy time we'll have there
    One and all!
    At the ugly bug ball!

We did "the ugly bug ball" as an end of year performance ... we had the ugly bug - who kept saying "I'm such an ugly bug" and all the other bugs arrived and recited/sung a song or rhyme relating to the creature - a group sang There's a tiny caterpillar on a leaf - another group sang There's a worm at the bottom of the garden another group Incey Wincey Spider another Ladybird Ladybird fly away home you get the idea ... and the finale was everyone singing the ugly bug ball. Parents made the costumes and we made giant leaves and flowers for scenery

  5. When I worked in Reception last year we held an Ugly Bug Ball -it was fantastic!
The children made antennae out of pipe cleaners attached to a simple card head piece. They made large symmetrical wings out of sugar paper & paint. We made some food with them such as spider spirals -rolled up jam sandwiches, the squash was renamed beetle juice.
We learnt the lyrics to Ugly Bug Ball and Creepy Crawly Calypso.

We all went into the hall to play party games and sing our songs. We didn't invite the parents as there wouldn't have been enough room!
