I'm currently studying CACHE level 3 specialist diploma in teaching and school support, and have been tasked by my class teacher to support year 1 children with 'Tricky words'.
So far we have used sand in trays to write the words (and used tweezers to pick up beads to improve fine motor), and have been 'fishing' for words using magnetic rods and paperclips.
I'm just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on other games/activities I can do to keep the groups engaged?
    Any suggestions would be helpful

Just google tricky word games and lots will come up. Some are computer games others are board games and the like.
