    From the TPS site:

Independent Schools – phased withdrawal from the Teachers’ Pension Scheme

The Department for Education has published a consultation to seek your views on the Teachers’ Pension Scheme; this is specifically looking at the opportunities to change the rules for independent schools only, making them more flexible when opting out of the Scheme. ...
    Closes 3 Nov.

Basically consulting on whether there should be facility for independents to withdraw from TPS for new staff but current members of staff remain in scheme.

That's quite common in private sector when they degrade the pension scheme. Although it often doesn't last and after a few years employers force existing staff onto the new/worse scheme too.

And it only gives schools the option, it doesn't require them to do that for existing staff.
