    Hello!

It's my second year of teaching FS English L1 and L2 but I'm looking to theme my lessons around something. I have been looking at possible topics including historical events and current affairs but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions to engage a class of 4 in an EBD school with varying needs and abilities?

    Thanks in advance :)

Hi, I’m in a similar situation to you and a similar setting but totally new to FS and English (I’m not an English specialist). I’ve also got no scheme of work - the previous teacher didn’t leave anything!!!!! Once I’ve got my head around it all I’m more than willing to share anything I come up with!

I teach FS to small groups of mainly boys. I'm doing themes based on Stories For Boys Who Dare To Be Different. The teacher I took over from started this, and I loved the idea. My themes are (in very general terms): Disability, Selflessness, Equality, Technology, Environment. I must admit, however, that although the themes are good from a generic point of view and for engaging students in discussion on potentially controversial topics, I find some of the themes more difficult to actually link to relevant FS reading & writing tasks… In hindsight, I think this approach might be more suited to ELC / Step Up to English, as a basis for progressing to GCSE, rather than for FS.
