    Currently putting forward a proposal for a science elective and was looking for a s many suggestions as possible!
    The outcomes I'll be covering include the following:

    table.MsoNormalTable
    {mso-style-name:"Table Normal";
    mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0;
    mso-tstyle-colband-size:0;
    mso-style-noshow:yes;
    mso-style-parent:"";
    mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt;

    mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt;
    mso-pagination:widow-orphan;
    font-size:10.0pt;
    font-family:"Times New Roman";}

    -By considering current issues of science,
    learners increasingly develop their understanding of scientific concepts and
    their capacity to form informed social, moral and ethical views. They reflect
    upon and critically evaluate media portrayal of scientific findings.

    -I have
    researched new developments in science and can explain how their current or
    future applications might impact on modern life.

    -Having
    selected scientific themes of topical interest, I can critically analyse the
    issues, and use relevant information to develop an informed argument.
    So far some of the ideas I have had include:
    -using the world without oil website lesson ideas for pupils to consider the impact of using up the Earth's resources,
    -investigating claims made in advertising about health/beauty benefits of products - this will allow us to consider sample size in data collection, scientific investigations, and could lead onto ethical implications of medical tests,
    - exploring the way science is communicated in movies/books and correcting some common misconceptions caused by these movies! This could lead onto a project in the local science centre looking at ways science can be effectively communicated in a fun but factual way!
    - forensics - link to csi, techniques for testing
    - Science industry - raising awareness of the factors a science company has to take into consideration before releasing a product
    - Disasters - human impacts, the force of mother nature, how science can help.
    My aim is to keep the elective practical with as many experiments for data collection as I can fit in rather than just paper based activities.
    If anyone can help with resources for any of the above or would like to get involved in a joint project or has suggestions for resources please get in touch!

  3. Hi,
    Have you looked at the upd8 website? Lots of topical issues covered there.
    Also my own website, Snapshot Science, contains teaching ideas and free downloadable resources based on topical news stories that will fulfill some of the criteria you listed above. If you use any of my ideas then please let me know how the lesson went.
