Fashions and heroes come and go but it seems James Dean will remain a cool dude forever. Particularly with Sixth Formers.

And of course the first gay icon, condemned as he was, poor lamb, to lurk in the closet all his life.....

Very interesting. Just one tiny flaw here. He wasn't gay.

Not always cool. Posing awkwardly on the front wheel of a motorbike in freshly-ironed jeans that have clearly never been worn before and with the fly unbuttoned isn't my definition of cool.

However, Rebel Without A Cause was one of my chosen movie texts for GCSE Media Studies when I taught the subject, and the classes enjoyed studying it. One critic maintained the film was not so much about bad kids as it was about bad parenting. An interesting angle.

All three of the young lead actors (James Dean, Natalie Wood, Sal Mineo) met unusual or untimely ends.

Apparently he was more likely to have been bisexual, but as Katzenjammer stated he was in the closet. Many stars at the time were. Many stars nowadays are too.

I'm not sure I could tell you who's currently still in the closet (as that's kinda the point of it existing) but quite a few famous people were in the public eye for a long time before feeling comfortable/safe enough to be open about their sexuality. Jodie Foster, Ellen De Generes, Barry Manilow, Ricky Martin and Philip Schofield are a few examples.

I always thought Cliff was more asexual than anything - can't imagine him with anyone at all.

Perhaps that should read I really don't want to...

Between you and me, I've heard whispers about a few other "stars" too.
    Lord Alfred Douglas.
    Ivor Novello.
    Gertrude Stein.
    Tom of Finland.
But keep it under your hat, okay?
