Tipping for maid service

Discussion in 'Personal' started by miniminx, Feb 17, 2011.

  1. After having a chat with my brother he said that when he stays in
a hotel throughout the world the expectation is that you leave a
small tip for maid service everyday. Now, not that I am a seasoned
traveller but I mayt leave something on the last day, but it has
never occurred to me to tip daily.

I was just wondering what anyone else does.

    Tip on last day, always.

    Only ever last day

  5. Last day. Ten euros for a week if it's always the same maid.

  6. Well that's conclusive then! I will tell him he is wrong!
He says the brits are known on another forum as 'Damn cheap a$$ed Brits' for not tipping daily!
Clearly when staying in America! Each to their own.

  7. Every day ... Shocked by the rest of you

I don't leave a tip. I usually tidy up before I go. [IMG]

we travel a lot and only ever tip at the end of our stay - daily is just silly imo!!

In the Uk tip means 'bonus'

In the US tip mean 'wages'

  12. I feel terrible - we were in Rome for four days and didn't even think to leave a tip for the maid. We never use hotels usually - I didn't know it was the norm to tip.

  13. Don't worry coffeekid, I'm not
convinced that it is the norm. In the states this seems to be what is
expected as blazer said as part of the wages. We are off to America
next month and we still won't tip daily. We will just hide our
    toothbrushes!

I didn't even know you were supposed to tip!
How much you tip in an American hotel?
Would you tip in a Euripean hotel on a package holiday?

  15. This is a thread that my brother pointed me to, I am sure there are many others.

Different countries have different cultural expectations but as a rule tip if you have been given a service beyond what might normally be expected or you like them.

  17. Every day. That way the actual maid who cleaned your room gets the money and not the one who happens to clean your room on the last day.

  18. Yes - tipping is normal in Europe.
It seems to be only the Brits who don't understand tipping!

Isn't it why we have the Minimum wage? You get the reate for the job and a tip is for going beyond that.
