Is any school allowing pupils to be absent for the Thursday and Friday of Thanksgiving? We have a very few American families and one has asked this year?

Allow that and before you know it you'll be saluting their flag.

    .

I would not consider this to be a religious observance, so my answer would be No.

    Best wishes

ah, no. We don't do that anymore and in fact, was in use from 1892 to 1942:The Bellamy salute was first demonstrated on October 12, 1892 according to Bellamy's published instructions for the "National School Celebration of Columbus Day" and The Bellamy salute is the salute described by Francis Bellamy, Christian socialist minister and author, to accompany the American Pledge of Allegiance, which he had authored. During the period when it was used with the Pledge of Allegiance, it was sometimes known as the "flag salute". Later, during the 1920s and 1930s, Italian fascists and Nazis adopted a salute which had the same form, and which was derived from the Roman salute. This resulted in controversy over the use of the Bellamy salute in the United States. It was officially replaced by the hand-over-heart salute when Congress amended the Flag Code on December 22, 1942.

    Then again,

ps. I will be making some pumpkin pies and doing some Thanksgiving activities next Wednesday in my school (as part of an afterschool club), but will be working Thursday and Friday. I will prepare a bit of Thanksgiving dinner at home next Thursday to celebrate after work so that the kitten (dual) can enjoy the day....
