Only been at a new school a short time and it’s clear it’s not for me, so looking to move on quickly. But concerned that I may have trouble getting time off for interview (particularly has just had time off for genuine sickness) - can I insist off time off, unpaid if necessary?

No you can't, at least normally; there might be a bit about it in your staff handbook. However I'd suggest you approach this gently - go and talk with HT or whoever, explain the situation, discuss the writing of references, ask for time off, offer if things get sticky for unpaid time off or to arrange cover.....negotiation is nearly always better than confrontation.
