Time needed to deliver OCR Nationals Level 2 in ICT

Discussion in 'Computing and ICT' started by keithripper, Jul 17, 2011.

  1. Hi

Like others, my school is still going to deliver OCR Nationals in ICT to students. Currently students study for 2 GSCE equivalents, or 180 glh. They have 2.5 hours a week in ICT over two years. Starting this year we will be delivering the new spec but with the same amount of time.
Now I have done the maths but as you people know, other factors always come into play when delivering applied subjects. I was wondering if I could tap the experiences of my colleagues on TES and ask if anyone has delivered the new spec and have you found it feasible to deliver it in the same time frame or do you need more time/deliver fewer GSCE equivalents?
    Thanks, in advance.

I am in exactly the same boat as you in terms of lesson time available and in terms of switching to the new spec. Last year we also went for 2 GCSEs and managed, however on the new spec I am only going for the one. I expect to finish it around the end of year 10, early year 11, however after that we will probably give the option of either starting the AS coursework early for those who know they will carry on or offering the others the chance to use the lesson as time to work on coursework for other subjects. I am not going to break my back to get 6 units in with teachers who are non specialists. If I had all the classes myself I might give it a go....

  4. 180 glh is of course one GCSE, hence the the disrepute OCR national et al has brought ICT in to.

  5. We did the 4-GCSE equivalent on the old-spec in 3hrs 20 mins a week with 'triple-science' kids.
God it was horrible but they did learn a good amount of stuff.
They all found it so challenging and horrible that they all left the school and chose never to do IT again.
    Can't blame 'em.
