    Hi, has anyone got any ideas/ games for using the THRASS picture cards? I am looking to make a bank of guided reading activities. Thanks in advance :))

The THRASS Picture Cards (T-55) can be used to play Letter Name Snap (saying the name for the same letter e.g. "Ay"), Grapheme Snap (saying "graph", "digraph" or "trigraph" for the bold keygraphemes) and Phoneme Snap (saying "Phoneme", and then saying the same sound for any grapheme in the two words). For some games, each of two learners builds their own pile of cards in the centre, with each learner taking it in turn to add to the top of their pile by turning over one card from their master pile. The two players then quickly look at the cards at the top of each pile to see if there is anything to ‘snap' about. Sometimes the players choose to each turn over and add a card to their pile at the same time, so that they then have two new cards to look at instead of only one. For other games, there is only one pile in the centre and each player takes it in turn to add their card to the top. If a player 'snaps' incorrectly, the other player wins the two piles of cards (or one pile) in the centre and adds these to the bottom of their master pile.

    For younger children or children learning English as an Additional Language, the cards are used with the THRASS Picture Book (T-54) to develop essential speaking and listening skills by matching, naming, describing, categorizing and discussing the pictures. The cards are also used to play Question Me - Pictures, where learners take turns to guess the picture on the back of a card. The winner is the person who asks fewer questions.

    The Picture Pages in Keywords for English Phonics (S-27, pages 4-9) can be used in a similar way - as stated in the guidance notes for teachers - "To become familiar with the keywords, have your learners talk about the pictures that are Animals (e.g. bird, rabbit, cat, kitten, duck, dog, fish etc), Things you can Eat (e.g. rabbit, duck, egg, jam, lamb, dinner, cherry etc), Parts of the Body (hand, leg, knee, wrist, thumb, hair, ear etc) and other categories. It is also good fun to find the pictures that contain the same colour."
