This might be a silly question but...

    It sounds like some sort of raffle competition. I've never come across anything like this that comes directly out of salary.
    I've been at schools where staff contribute £5 per month (or similar) to a fund that is then used to buy a present for staff who leave, saving the hassle of sending around an envelope for contributions.
    Ring the school and ask what the draw is all about.
