THEO GRIFF - handing in notice

Discussion in 'Pay and conditions' started by 59th_street, Dec 31, 2010.

  1. hi
    a relatively quick question
On a previous query you said that notice must be given by 28th Feb for 30 April.
Is this still the case even if the new term starts on Tuesday 26 April?
It would mean teaching for a week and then leaving.

If notice is given on 18 Feb (last day of half term) to leave on Mon 25 April (last day of Easter Hols) is this still ok?

The rules say that the Spring Term ends on 30th April, but also recognise that because of the nature of Easter that this isn't what happens in reality.
If you are appointed to a new school then the Burgundy Book rules also mean that you are entitled to be released "early" to allow you to start the new term at your new post. Your old employer will pay you up to the last day of the holidays; your new one from the first day of term.
If, however, you are going to a job that is outside teaching, then the rules don't strictly apply - although I can't imagine many schools trying to force an unwilling member of staff to return for the want of 3 days work!

You can submit your notice at any point up to the 28th February, even though that cut-off date is in the half-term holiday. Some people make a late decision to leave and are entitled to notify the school of their decision at the last possible date specified in the resignation rules.
The same applies to resigning to leave at 31st December or 31st August, where you can submit your notice on the 31st October or 31st May respectively, which also fall in holiday periods in most areas.

Do take care when handing in notice at the very last minute. I always suggest Belt and Braces here. Hand-deliver it to school, and also e-mail it, so that you have proof that it got there on the right day.
Best wishes and happy New Year!
