THE TORY PARTY. The great Bernard Levin once said: (I'm paraphrasing here but this is the gist of what he said)
"Over the years my beliefs, attitudes and opinions have changed on many topics. But on one subject my view remains constant: my utter abhorrence of the Tory Party."

In light of the magnificent and unprecedented response of the government in respect of Covid-19 - furloughing, government loans, help for the self employed etc. - has the soul of the Tory Party changed since Bernard Levin's day?

A great, and decent, man, whose wisdom is sadly missed. Someone said of him that he was one of the few people who could use a semicolon properly.

I don't know if your description the Government response was meant to be ironic but it is certainly hilarious. Let's just say they didn't really have much of a choice in the matter.

The Tory Party has essentially always been for two things: small state and free market. In addition, they about being in power, the people who are in the Tory Party believe in the "born to rule" concept.
Things which the British people adore such as the Welfare State and the NHS are an anathema to the Tory Party because they would like to get rid of them (small state, remember) but can't because they recognise they wouldn't stay in power, so they have to pretend to like.

The current mob in charge are extremists, they have an extreme view of the free market (which is why they hate the EU with a vengeance) and they want nothing more than to do away with things like the NHS (which is why they hate the EU with a vengeance).

They are also very lazy intellectually which is why the current mob are so incompetent. They can't be bothered with anything like a critical analysis of their (very flawed) ideas so they have absolutely no idea of the possible consequences of any of their actions might be.

They also only represent only a small part of the Tory Party so although they currently have the ascendency there is every possibility of some sort of a showdown in the future. (possibly not to distant)

So although the current mob have put in place reasonable measures it needs to be remembered that they are doing so through gritted teeth which is why they place so much on following the science even though it is obvious they have not always done so.

It's hilarious that the current hard right, free market, libertarian tories are saving capitalism with socialism.

yet another anti tory party thread.
This forum becomes awash with such threads and unfortunately often the same observations are trotted out±

'yet another anti tory party thread.' ???

Please read my post. This is NOT an anti-Tory Party thread! Or am I anti-Tory. I am asking that the Tory Party be given credit where credit is due. The measures brought in to combat the Covid-19 crisis are as radical as any brought in through great reforms and initiatives of the 1945 Labour Government.

    Credit where it's due please.

Would you care to spell out the Tory party's achievements in government since 2010?

Dont worry, socialism will soon be abandoned and it will be Austerity 2.0. The Labour Party will not oppose it.

But you can't escape the truth, even when it hurts, and even when it does not appear in those tabloid rags you read.

I have to say that I always enjoyed Levin's articles and broadcasts, but he never pretended to be even-handed. He always regarded it the role of the editor to ensure that output was balanced, and not his own personal responsibility.

Are you missing The Good Yarn, old chap? I hear it went downhill before the lockdown.

Myself personally I never liked Levin. He always seemed to get up my nose.
I did have a DR Levein as a child and he was good...as long as where nor trying to get a sick note when you were not sick!

Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! Our chief weapon is surprise...surprise and fear...fear and surprise.... our two weapons are fear and surprise...and ruthless efficiency.... Our three weapons are fear, surprise, and ruthless efficiency...and an almost fanatical devotion to the Pope.... Our four...no... amongst our weapons.... amongst our weaponry...are such elements as fear, surprise.... I'll come in again. (exit and exeunt)

I did actually think about that one but I decide to keep the stay in power as separate.

Labour, Libs/Libdems, and Tory leaders all believe that they are the ruling class and we are the ruled class.
