The Secret Life of Bees

Discussion in 'Book club' started by anstuc, Jul 3, 2006.

  1. by Sue Monk Kidd. NOTHING to do with bees! I've just searched the archives and have found very little posts on this wonderful, wonderful, book. For those of you looking for a holiday read (I've already started - Scotand!) I would thouroughly recommend this novel. From the very start you feel like Lily, the main character, is part of your life and you are urging her on from the first sentence. It's one of those books where you speak of the main character as if she were a friend. I was so diasppointed when I got to the end as I felt that my relationship with Lily was over...(sad, I know!!!).

    Another one I loved!

I have her 2nd novel, The Mermaid Chair, lined up for my holidays, which, btw, started today!

    Re The Mermaids Chair

Having now read it, I should warn you I was very disappointed with it. I did at least finish it but it was a chore. While I thought the Secret Life was an excellent read, this one felt forced. A central part of the story is a love affair betweeen the main character and a (nearly) priest - and for me it just didn't work. That said, I don't go for romance in general so it might be my personal taste.

  9. Am upping this thread as I have just read 'Bees' and thoroughly enjoyed it. The idea of the Daughters all worshipping a mixture of religions (and the honey!) really appealed to me! I also think that the author intended parallels to be drawn between the beehives (containing mostly females) and the Pink House?

    Did anyone else enjoy it?

  10. Yes I adored it! Have you read The Mermaid Chair by her? Another fabulous read... are they her only two? I must check.

  12. Thanks Web Staff! I am hoping that they don't balls it up by completely changing the ending like with Captain Corelli (DON'T get me started on that one!).

I haven't read The Mermaid Chair. What's it about? Is it as good/better than 'Bees'?

  13. I loved "The Secret Life of Bees" but found "The Mermaid Chair" disappointing, maybe because I had built up so much expectation. Anyone who liked "Bees" might also like "Rush home Road" by Lori Lansens.

  14. strange- I sort of remember this book, but can't for the life of me remember how it ended- obviously not asking here- will have to root it out-

I have just read this book and it was wonderful! So good, in fact, that I have ordered a DVD of the film they made, for just £2.99 from Amazon. Bargain!!
I would heartily recommend it to anyone!

  16. I'm halfway through The Secret Life of Bees and broke off it to read The Slap for a Book Club (see other thread!) - I can't wait to get back to it. I was LOVING it!!

Loved The Secret Life of Bees!
This book below is slightly in same vein - life through the eyes of a 10 year old. Don't be put off by the first sentence - it is not a ghost story. Currently FREE on Kindle.

  18. Loved the Secret Life - have now passed it on to some 5 or 6 friends to read!! Is the film any good?
Will soon start The Mermaid Chair, although have read some readers were disappointed but will give it a go all the same.
Theo, I'll look at your one as well - thanks for the suggestion!

I haven't watched the film yet - plan to do that tomorrow. However, when I saw the trailer for it [online], the snips that they showed were exactly as they were in the book, with commentry from the girl's character -which added detail.
